Rangpur Mayhem: Titu Roy on remand for 4 more days
A Rangpur court yesterday granted another four-day remand for Titu Chandra Roy in a case filed over “demeaning Islam” in a Facebook post.
The court passed the order after police produced him before it on completion of four-day remand, said Babul Islam, sub-inspector of Rangpur Detective Brach (North) of Police, also the investigation officer of the case.
Police produced the 40-year-old before the chief judicial magistrate's court around 3:30pm and sought 10-day remand for him for further interrogation. Law enforcers also submitted a health check-up report of Titu to the court.
Alamgir Hossain of Khaleya Shah Bazaar in Rangpur had filed the case with Gangachara Police Station on November 6. It was transferred to the DB on Tuesday night, hours after police picked up Titu from Chiravija village in Nilphamari's Jaldhaka upazila.
Protesting the Facebook post, hundreds of zealots attacked Thakurbari village in Rangpur on November 10. They torched 11 Hindu houses, vandalised many others and looted valuables from there.
A man was killed and about 20 others were injured after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
