Mbappe just a brace away from breaking Ronaldo’s Madrid record

After a brace on Wednesday night, Kylian Mbappe remains just two goals away from breaking Cristiano Ronaldo's calendar-year scoring record for Real Madrid.

Mbappe converted a penalty and scored the match-winner with a long-range strike that the goalkeeper mishandled to help Real Madrid secure a narrow 3-2 victory over third-tier side Talavera in the Copa del Rey round of 32.

Mbappe, who came into the game with 56 goals scored in all competitions in 2025 for Real Madrid, is now just one goal shy of the 59-goal calendar-year record set by Ronaldo in 2013.

With one match still to play this year -- on Saturday against struggling Sevilla in LaLiga at the Santiago Bernabeu -- the French forward could surpass the Portuguese great. All Mbappe needs is a brace against Sevilla, a realistic prospect given he has already achieved that feat in eight games for Los Blancos this term.

Overall, Mbappe has scored 65 goals for club and country in 2025 so far, with Ronaldo's best-ever tally for club and country standing at 69 goals in 2013. Meanwhile, Argentina great Lionel Messi sits at the top of the list, holding the record for most goals in a calendar year for club and country by any player, with 91 strikes in 2012.
