Two festival-honoured films, ‘Fereshteh’ and ‘Barir Naam Shahana’, now in Bangladeshi theatres
After travelling the international festival circuit, two acclaimed films — "Fereshteh" and "Barir Naam Shahana" — are finally being released for audiences in Bangladesh. Starting today, both titles will screen across local theatres. Alongside these, Japanese anime blockbuster "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle" has also been showing since Tuesday (September 16) at Star Cineplex.
'Fereshteh'
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. "Fereshteh" is a Bangladesh-Iran joint production directed by Iranian filmmaker Morteza Atashzamzam. The story follows the lives of a rickshaw-puller and his garment worker wife in Dhaka, capturing their struggles, resilience, and humanity against the backdrop of poverty and marginalisation. Shot on real locations, the film avoids glamorous sets, embracing raw authenticity to connect more deeply with viewers. The lead roles are played by Sumon Faruk and Jaya Ahsan, with supporting performances from Shahiduzzaman Selim, Shahed Ali, Rikta Nandini Shimu, Shaheen Mridha, and child artist Sathi. Since its completion in 2022, "Fereshteh" has been screened and praised at several international film festivals. From today, it will be shown in six theatres, including Star Cineplex, Lion Cinemas, and Blockbuster.
'Barir Naam Shahana'
Directed by Leesa Gazi, "Barir Naam Shahana" portrays the journey of Deepa, a divorced woman determined to live life on her own terms despite social and familial constraints. Set in a conservative backdrop, the film explores resilience and defiance against patriarchal norms. Anan Siddiqua leads as Deepa, supported by performances from Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Lutfor Rahman George, Iresh Zaker, Kazi Ruma, and Kamrunnahar Muni. The film has already been screened at prestigious festivals in London, Chicago, Melbourne, Birmingham, Rome, and Mumbai. Starting today, it will be available in nine theatres across Bangladesh.
