ICC Women's World Cup 2025

Malinga's high praise, Marufa says 'Many thanks, Legend'

Bangladesh pacer Marufa Akter made an unforgettable impact in the ICC Women's World Cup with a fiery opening spell against Pakistan that left cricket fans and legends alike singing her praises.

The 19-year-old, the only specialist fast bowler in Bangladesh's XI, delivered two stunning in-swingers in the very first over, dismissing Pakistani openers Omaima Sohail and Sidra Ameen for golden ducks.

Her impeccable control and ability to generate sharp swing rattled Pakistan's top order and set the tone for a memorable Bangladesh victory. Marufa finished with figures of 2 for 31 in her seven overs and was deservedly named Player of the Match.

The ICC shared a video of her dismissals on its official Facebook page, showcasing the beauty of her deliveries. The clip quickly gained attention, including from Sri Lankan fast-bowling great Lasith Malinga, who reposted it on his own page. Malinga, renowned for his own mastery of toe-crushing yorkers and deadly swing, praised Marufa's brilliance, writing:

"Pure skill. Excellent control. So far the best delivery in this tournament."

He was particularly impressed by the delivery that bowled Sidra Ameen -- a ball many are already calling a contender for the best of the World Cup. Marufa responded humbly in the comments, writing: "Many thanks, Legend."

It wasn't just Malinga who was impressed. Former India captain and cricket stalwart Mithali Raj also applauded Marufa's performance. Speaking on air, she highlighted Marufa's ability to control the swing and bowl at an effective length.

"She got a lot of swing, but more importantly, she bowled the right length. That's what gets you rewards at this level," Mithali noted. "She was on a hat-trick in her very first World Cup match -- what a way to start! I saw her during the T20 World Cup in South Africa, and her pace and approach stood out even then."
