Tetulia records season's lowest temperature so far at 6.8°C
The northernmost district of Bangladesh, Panchagarh, recorded the country’s lowest temperature so far this season at 6.8 degrees Celsius in the 24 hours ending at 9:00am today.
According to Jitendranath Ray, assistant officer at the Tetulia Weather Observatory Centre, the temperature dropped from 9.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, following readings of 7.5°C on Wednesday, 8.6°C on Tuesday, and 12.8°C on Monday.
Wind speeds during the period ranged between 10 and 12 kilometres per hour, while humidity stood at 100 percent.
Ray explained that the inactivity of monsoon winds is mainly responsible for the fluctuations, particularly the narrow gap between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
He added that the colder conditions are likely to persist throughout the month.
Rafiqul Islam, 60, of Dokropara in Panchagarh municipality, said daily activities have become increasingly difficult as the cold intensifies.
Shariful Islam, 46, a rickshaw-van puller in Boda upazila, noted that pulling his rickshaw was harder than the previous day due to unusually cold winds, adding that as of 10:10am the sun had yet to appear.
Habibur Rahman, 60, a rickshaw puller from Thakurgaon Sadar, said his income drops during cold spells as people venture out only for essential activities.
Meanwhile, Jomir Uddin, 55, of Yakubpur village, working in a potato field, said bone-chilling winds have made it difficult to continue farming.
Elsewhere in northern Bangladesh, temperatures were recorded at 10°C in Thakurgaon, 9°C in Nilphamari’s Dimla and Kurigram’s Rajarhat, and 9.8°C in Dinajpur.
