Jamaat-led alliance holds emergency meeting without key ally
Top leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance engaged in seat-sharing talks at an emergency meeting at Jamaat’s central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, amid growing tensions over electoral arrangements.
No representative from Islami Andolan Bangladesh attended the meeting, several leaders present confirmed to The Daily Star.
A photograph from the meeting later circulated on social media, showing Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, NCP Convener Nahid Islam, BDP Chairman Anwarul Islam Chand, AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju, and Khelafat Majlis Secretary General Ahmad Abdul Kader, among others.
Meanwhile, Islami Andolan Bangladesh said discussions were still ongoing and no final position had yet been reached.
In a press release issued around 1:30pm by the party’s central publicity wing, Islami Andolan said, “The situation has not yet reached a stage where a final word can be given on the understanding."
It said that discussions were being held on different aspects.
The statement added that public expectations had grown around a possible understanding among Islamist forces based on a “one-box” policy in the post-uprising political landscape. However, it said that despite emerging discomfort, it was premature to announce any settlement.
“Leaders are continuing multidimensional and multi-party discussions. Islami Andolan Bangladesh and the other parties will formally inform the nation when the situation reaches a stage where a final decision can be announced,” the statement said.
