Police yesterday arrested an expelled coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) in Feni, in a case filed on charges of deception, extortion, and defamation.

The coordinator, Omar Faruk Shuvo, is a resident of Jagatjibanpur village in Forhadnagar union under Feni Sadar upazila.

In August, Shuvo was expelled from his position as co-coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Feni district for violating organisational discipline. However, he reportedly continued to identify himself as a "student coordinator" and participated in various programs and meetings over the past few months.

Reports suggest Shuvo demanded Tk 3 lakh from Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, the temporarily suspended principal of Feni Alia Kamil Madrasa, promising to help reinstate him.

A recording of his extortion demand went viral yesterday on social media.

According to the viral call record, Shuvo claimed to act on behalf of Abdul Kader and Hamza Mahbub, coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement. He also mentioned Azizur Rahman Rizvi, a student of Dhaka University's finance department, as a mediator.

Police said Rizvi's father, Siddiqur Rahman, filed a case against Shuvo at Feni Model Police Station last night. Acting on the complaint, police conducted a raid and arrested Shuvo.

"Shuvo will be sent to jail through the court today," said Marm Singh Tripura, officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station.
