Two people were killed in a fire broke out at a multi-storey shopping mall in Chittagong city’s Teri Bazar area this morning.

The fire originated on the fourth floor of the 12-storey KB Arcade Plaza building around 9:55am and later spread across the entire floor, covering the area with thick black smoke, said fire service sources.

The deceased were identified as Mohammed Yunus, 52, and Mohammed Solaiman, 28. Both were from Patiya upazila of Chattogram.

A control room source at the Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters in Agrabad said firefighters, with four units from two stations, rushed to the spot around 10:00am and doused the blaze by 11:00am. Firefighters rescued three people and sent them to hospital.

Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Asheq of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost said, “Three people were taken to the CMCH emergency unit, where two were declared dead after examination. The bodies were kept at the CMCH morgue.”

Another injured person, named Mamun, was undergoing treatment at the hospital, he added.

It is worth mentioning that Teri Bazar is one of the largest markets for wholesale and retail clothing items. Many shop employees were found asleep after late-night sales ahead of Eid.
