Prince William pledges to bring change to the monarchy
Prince William has said he intends to bring change to the monarchy when he becomes king, describing his vision as "change for good."
In a candid interview with actor Eugene Levy for the Apple TV+ series "The Reluctant Traveller", the Prince of Wales admitted he wants to modernise aspects of royal tradition while preserving what still holds meaning.
"I think it's safe to say that change is on my agenda," he said. "Not overly radical, but changes that I think need to happen. I don't fear change—I enjoy it."
The prince, who gave Levy a tour of Windsor Castle, acknowledged the weight of family history. "History can be a real weight and an anchor around you. I think it's important to live for the here and now," he said.
While stressing the value of tradition, William noted he is unafraid to question whether certain customs remain relevant. "Are we still having the most impact we could be having? That's what I like to ask."
Arriving on an electric scooter, the prince also shared lighter moments with the "Schitt's Creek" star, revealing his fondness for the "American Pie" films in which Levy starred. The pair visited the castle grounds, walked William's family dog, Orla, and ended at a nearby pub where they shared a pint—Guinness for Levy, sweet cider for William.
Their conversation turned personal as the Prince spoke openly about family life, admitting that the illnesses of both his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and his father, King Charles III, have taken a toll. "Stuff to do with family overwhelms me quite a bit," he said. "We try to make sure we give our children the security and safety they need. We're a very open family, but you never quite know the knock-on effects."
William also reflected on his childhood under intense media scrutiny, saying he is determined to shield his own children from the same pressures. "I hope we don't go back to some of the practices Harry and I grew up in. I'll do everything I can to make sure we don't regress."
The interview did not touch on relations with Prince Harry, but William spoke proudly of his family's resilience. "I'm so proud of my wife and my father for how they handled last year. My children have managed brilliantly as well."
Levy later said he was struck by William's candour. "It was just a conversation. I wasn't thinking of it as a scoop. But it was surreal."
As the day wound down, the Prince looked to the future: "Being able to overcome challenges is what makes us who we are. I want to create a world my son will be proud of."
