SQ Celsius shuts knitting section indefinitely over worker demands in Gazipur

The authorities of SQ Celsius Limited in Gazipur announced shut down of its knitting section indefinitely after workers presented a 13-point demand on Saturday afternoon.
Workers' demands include an hour-long lunch break, promotion of 80 percent of operators to senior positions, and cash payments instead of food at night.
They also asked for two weekly holidays and full production and quality bonuses.
Other demands include adding winding machines, fixing technical issues, improving planning, and providing various incentives such as quality, mending, and winding bonuses.
The workers also requested the removal of corrupt officials.
Workers, speaking anonymously, stated they had been peacefully protesting since Thursday before submitting the written demands to management.
They emphasised that they had no intention of escalating the situation further.
Shahriat Hossain, general manager of human resources of SQ Celsius Limited, criticised the workers for initiating a work stoppage without prior notice.
He termed it an illegal strike, urging the workers to return to their duties.
According to SI Sharif Hossain of the Gazipur Industrial Police, the factory was closed indefinitely based on the provisions of Bangladesh Labor Law, 2006, due to the unrest caused by the workers' actions.
