Shakib cleared of suspect bowling action

After months of uncertainty, Bangladesh's ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has finally been cleared of his suspect bowling action.

The 37-year-old had twice failed reassessments but successfully passed the latest test in England, bringing an end to a turbulent phase in his illustrious career.

The development comes as a significant relief for Shakib, who was left out of Bangladesh's Champions Trophy squad due to his inability to bowl. The selectors had been hesitant to pick him purely as a batter, effectively ruling him out of what was supposed to be his farewell tournament in international cricket.

Confirming the news to Cricbuzz, Shakib expressed his delight at being allowed to resume bowling.

"The news is right (about passing the bowling test), and I am cleared to bowl again," said Shakib.

His bowling action first came under scrutiny during a County Championship match for Surrey against Somerset in September 2024. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) subsequently suspended him following an independent evaluation that deemed his action illegal.

Shakib then underwent two separate reassessments—first in England and later in India—failing both attempts before being banned from bowling. However, the seasoned all-rounder remained determined, working rigorously to modify his action and finally earning clearance in his latest test.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a statement regarding this issue.

"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has received information on the outcome of the independent re-assessment of Shakib Al Hasan's bowling action carried out at Loughborough University, UK on 9 March 2025. The BCB understands that according to the latest assessment report, Shakib has successfully remedied his action and his suspension from bowling in England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Competitive County Cricket and the Hundred will be lifted with immediate effect. The ECB will issue a detailed media release regarding the lifting of the suspension soon," read the BCB statement.
