InterContinental launches Bangladesh’s first AI-powered glass bottle water plant
InterContinental Dhaka has become the first hotel in Bangladesh to introduce an AI-powered glass bottle water plant, reinforcing its focus on sustainable hospitality and plastic waste reduction.
The facility, which produces zero mile artisanal water on the hotel premises, was inaugurated in January 2026 in Dhaka. The event was attended by Nasreen Jahan, Chairman of Bangladesh Services Limited and Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism; Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan, Managing Director of Bangladesh Services Limited and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism; David O’Hanlon, General Manager of InterContinental Dhaka; along with board members of Bangladesh Services Limited and senior hotel officials.

Installed in partnership with Boon, a global hydration technology company, the plant is designed to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles across guest rooms, restaurants and banquet venues. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce plastic consumption within the hotel’s operations.
The system uses WaterAI™ technology to monitor water quality continuously. The technology is supported by multiple patented purification processes, ensuring safety, consistency and sustainability in water production.
Speaking at the inauguration, David O’Hanlon said, “As a pioneer, we are privileged to share this sustainable initiative which reflects the hotel’s long-standing vision of integrating sustainable practices into our operations and setting new benchmarks for the industry.”
The initiative aligns with IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow sustainability framework and reflects InterContinental Dhaka’s ongoing efforts to integrate environmentally responsible practices into luxury hospitality operations in Bangladesh.
