‘Resign first, then contest polls if you want to stay in power’

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday urged the interim government advisers to resign if they want to stay in power and then contest the elections.
"If you want to stay in power, step down first and then contest the election. (You) form a new party outside the government -- we have no objection. But any such activity while remaining in power will not be tolerated," he said.
Fakhrul said this while speaking as the chief guest at a rally organised by the Jashore district BNP at the local Town Hall Maidan in the afternoon, reports UNB.
The rally aimed to demand a reduction in the prices of daily necessities, improvements in the deteriorating law and order situation, the announcement of a clear electoral roadmap, and the cessation of what he termed the conspiracy of fascism.
Fakhrul reiterated the call for national elections to be held first. "BNP will not accept local government elections before the national ones," he said.
"The collaborators of fascist Hasina will raise their ugly heads if the local elections are held first, which the people of the country will not accept," he added.
He pledged that if the BNP comes to power, they would reopen the closed factories in Nawapara, Jashore, and permanently resolve the waterlogging issues in Bhabadah.
He claimed that despite numerous attempts, "fascist" Sheikh Hasina could not succeed in splitting BNP, which has been a party of the people struggling against fascism for the past 17 years.
He emphasised the need for necessary reforms to facilitate elections quickly and expressed optimism that the Yunus government would hold national elections soon.
Fakhrul also said if local government elections were held first, it would empower the allies of fascism, a situation that the people of the country would not accept.
