Yunus-Modi meeting discusses Hasina extradition

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus discussed the sensitive issue of former Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina's extradition during his much-awaited meeting with the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi.
"Chief adviser has discussed all issues of our mutual interest. For example, renewal of the Ganges water treaty, Teesta water sharing, border killing," said Shafiqul Alam, the chief adviser's press secretary while briefing reporters in Bangkok. "I would say the meeting was very constructive, productive and fruitful."
Shafiqul said the matter of Sheikh Hasina's extradition and her "incendiary statements from India were specifically raised" during the half hour meeting between the heads of governments.
Yunus and Modi held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand today. This is the first ever meeting between the two leaders after the interim government took over on August 5, 2024 as Hasina fled to India.
But bilateral relations have remained strained since then. India has repeatedly expressed concerns over alleged attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, which the Bangladeshi government has termed interference in its internal affairs and exaggeration of isolated incidents.
Bangladesh has witnessed growing anti-India sentiment for a number of reasons, including Delhi's alleged support to Sheikh Hasina during her 15-year rule.
Delhi has not responded to Dhaka's request to extradite the former prime minister to face trial for killings during the mass uprising.
