‘Terrible moment’ for Bangladesh’s democracy: EU ambassador terms attacks on The Daily Star, Prothom Alo
European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, has said that the attacks on The Daily Star and Prothom Alo were a "terrible moment" for Bangladesh's democracy.
"These are attacks on freedom of the media and on freedom of expression. And I can only underline how critical it is to maintain space for freedom of expression in Bangladesh as you head towards elections," he said during a solidarity visit to The Prothom Alo today.
"I hope we never see anything like this again. It was a terrible moment for Bangladesh's democracy."
In an unprecedented event, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo offices were vandalised, looted, set on fire on Thursday night that continued until the early hours of Friday.
"Now you must be resilient, get back on your feet, keep publishing, keep reporting, and hold everyone to account in order for the elections to proceed smoothly," Micheal Miller said.
