RMG workers leave Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after 3.5 hours of protest
Garment workers protesting the death of their colleague in a road accident have left the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after three and a half hours, restoring normal traffic flow.
At 1:25pm, Salna Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saleh Ahmed told The Daily Star that traffic on the highway returned to normal around 12:30pm following discussions with the workers.
The demonstration began around 8:00am in front of the factory and escalated to a highway blockade from 9:00am, causing severe traffic disruption.
Industrial police earlier confirmed that workers blocked the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. Industrial police personnel have been deployed to manage the situation.
The body of the deceased worker remains at Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where family members were present. Police are working to recover the body, and legal action will follow.
The OC added that industrial police are in talks with Golden Refit Garments Limited authorities regarding the incident.
According to protesting workers, Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, 32, an employee of the factory, was killed in a road accident while crossing the road around 6:00am, police confirmed.
