A madrasa principal in Gazipur has alleged that his house was attacked by BNP activists because he voted for a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.

Mubarak Hossain, principal of Pakiaba Balika Madrasa in Kapasia upazila and a Jamaat supporter, said that even two days after the incident, he remains in hiding with his wife and children.

Mubarak told The Daily Star this afternoon that around 40-50 people, allegedly led by BNP activists, ambushed his house at approximately 12:30am early Friday. He alleged that the attackers vandalised the house and attempted to set fire to it.

He also said that the attackers assaulted him with knives, spears, and sticks. During the attack, his wife’s hand was broken, and his daughter, Mahmuda Nasrin, was also injured. Police and the army subsequently arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Mubarak said he would file a complaint with Kapasia Police Station.

He alleged that the attack was carried out under the leadership of BNP ward unit president Belayet Hossain and ward organising secretary Babul Mia.

Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Alam told The Daily Star that the attack took place at the principal’s house. The police and army quickly went to the spot but did not find anyone. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.

However, upazila BNP member secretary Khandaker Azizur Rahman Pera said he was not aware of such an incident. He said he would investigate the matter and verify the truth
