Breaking tradition, PM Tarique Rahman limits state iftars to 2 events this year
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has decided not to host lavish state iftar programmes this year.
Instead, he will attend only two iftar gatherings to be arranged for diplomats, orphans and Islamic scholars.
“Considering the overall situation of the country, the prime minister will arrange only two iftar programmes,” Additional Press Secretary to the prime minister, Atikur Rahman Ruman, said today.
According to him, the first iftar will be held tomorrow (March 6, 2026) in honour of diplomats, while the second will take place on Saturday (March 7) for orphans, Islamic scholars and religious leaders. Both events will be hosted at the State Guest House Jamuna.
Earlier, the Prime Minister’s Office had scheduled iftar gatherings for politicians on March 8 and for journalists on March 10 at Jamuna.
However, those programmes have now been cancelled, Ruman said.
Traditionally, the prime minister hosts several state iftar programmes every year for people from different professions and groups.
