A man was hacked to death in Shibchar Bazar in Madaripur's Shibchar upazila around 9:00pm on Sunday.

The victim, Rakib Madbor, 25, from Charshyamail village under Shiruail union, had recently been released on bail in a murder case, said Md Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibchar Police Station.

Critically injured, Rakib was rushed to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He died on the way.

A 19-second video clip of the incident went viral on social media, showing two attackers hacking him with sharp weapons as onlookers stood by. Police said the assailants have been identified through the video and CCTV footage.

On May 6, Ibne Samad Sardar of the same area was hacked by assailants and later died after months of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Rakib was arrested in that case and later released on bail.

Citing CCTV evidence and accounts from locals, the OC said, "Several assailants suddenly attacked Rakib with Chinese axes, striking him repeatedly until he collapsed. They fled immediately after."

After a post-mortem examination, Rakib's body was handed over to his family yesterday.

Police said Rakib's family and the attackers' families had a longstanding feud, with both sides accused in several cases, including murder.

"We suspect the killing stems from that conflict," the OC said, adding that police will file a murder case over the incident.

Meanwhile, also on Sunday night, a 65-year-old man was hacked to death by unidentified assailants on his way home in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila.

Manik Mia was a grocery shop owner in Uttar Bakhrnagar union, said Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Chandra Sarker.

"The victim suffered sharp weapon injuries, especially to the neck. The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately. Legal procedures are underway," the ASP said yesterday.

Quoting locals, the police said Manik closed his shop at Uttar Bakhrnagar Bazar around midnight and started for home. Miscreants stopped him near the bank of the Arial Kha river and attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.

When he did not return home, family members began calling him. Despite repeated phone calls, he did not respond.

"We called him many times, but he did not answer. We found his body near the riverbank Monday morning," said his brother Suruj Mia, 50.

Police later sent the body to the morgue for autopsy.
