3 workers killed as sand-laden vessel sinks in Arial Khan

Three workers were killed as a sand-laden vessel sank in the Arial Khan river in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur today.

The deceased are Alauddin, 45, of Ahmedpur union of Bhola's Charfesson upazila, Ekramul, 30, of Kaunia upazila of Rangpur and Isa Islam, 22, of Lohagara upazila in Narail, reports our Shariatpur correspondent quoting police.

Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam, in-charge of Kalatala River Police Outpost, said the incident took place at Char-Kamarkandi area of Ward 6 of Nikhli union of the upazila around 4:00pm.

Later, at 4:30pm, naval police with the help of local divers recovered the bodies of the three.

He said that there was a strong current in the river where the bulkhead was anchored and water gushed into the ship.

The three workers were sleeping in the boat at the time of the incident, he added.

The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to the families.
