2001 Ramna Batamul blast: Death row convict Mufti Shafiqur arrested

Rapid Action Battalion today arrested Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, a death row convict in the bomb blasts during Pahela Baishakh celebrations 21 years ago at Ramna Batamul in 2001.
A team of Rab arrested him from Bhairab area in Kishoreganj, ANM Emran Khan, assistant director of Rab's Legal and Media wing, said today.
Rab will hold a press conference in this regard tomorrow.
Mufti Shafiqur was also awarded life imprisonment in a case filed following the 21 August grenade attack on a rally of the then opposition Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka in 2004.
Ten people were killed and dozens injured after two bombs went off 21 years ago on this day during the celebrations of Bangla New Year, 1408 (on April 14, 2001) at Ramna Batamul.
In June 2014, a Dhaka court handed down death penalty to eight militants of Harkatul Jihad al Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B), including Mufti Shafiqur and its top leader Mufti Abdul Hannan.
Six other militants of the banned outfit were sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in the blasts.
