2 killed in clash over land dispute in Naogaon, 15 hurt

Two people were killed and at least 15 others injured in a clash over a land dispute in Niamatpur upazila of Naogaon today.

The incident occurred around 11:00am at Dhangapara village in Chandannagar union of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Shariful Islam, 55, and Azizul Haque, 55.

According to police and locals, the conflict arose from a long-standing dispute between Saiful Islam and Lalchan over adjacent plots of land. Saiful's father had reportedly planted trees on the disputed land years ago. During a recent land survey, one of the trees was found to be on Lalchan's side of the property.

Yesterday, Saiful allegedly cut down two mahogany trees, which further escalated tensions. The situation turned violent this morning when Lalchan confronted Saiful and asked him to build a boundary wall. When Saiful responded that he was busy, Lalchan, along with Kasem Hazi and a group of 20–22 people, allegedly attacked him.

As others rushed to Saiful's aid, the attackers reportedly used sharp weapons including machetes, axes, and sickles.

Shariful Islam, who was engaged in the clash, died on the spot.

Fifteen injured individuals were taken to Niamatpur Upazila Health Complex. Among them, three in critical condition, including Azizul Haque, were later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where Azizul died in the afternoon.

Niamatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman confirmed the casualties and said that both bodies were sent to Naogaon General Hospital for autopsy.

He added that 10 suspects have been detained so far and that additional police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. However, no case had been filed as of this evening, the OC said.
