5-year-old accidentally sets parents on fire in Jashore

A couple in Jashore sustained burn injuries last night after their five-year-old child, unaware of the consequences, lit a gas lighter during an argument between his parents, who had poured kerosene on themselves following the altercation.

The injured -- Hira Das, 38, and his wife Prabhati Das, 32 -- have been admitted to Jashore General Hospital, said Bablur Rahman Khan, officer-in-charge of Jhikargachha Police Station.

Locals said Hira and Prabhati, residents of Kauria Rajapur of Panisara union in Jhikargachha upazila, often engaged in heated arguments.

During the argument on the road in front of their house last night, they poured kerosene on their bodies. Their five-year-old child accidentally lit a gas lighter, erupting the fire.

Hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to put out the fire. The injured couple was first taken to Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital.

Jobair Hossain, a doctor in the emergency department of the hospital, said parts of the couple's hands were burned. Doctors confirmed that Hira and Prabhati are out of danger and have been provided with the necessary medical care.
