Pooja Sengupta to represent Bangladesh at Cannes International Dance Festival
Renowned Bangladeshi dancer, choreographer, director, and cultural entrepreneur Pooja Sengupta, Artistic Director of Turongomi Repertory Dance Theatre, has been invited by the GIANIN LORINGETT Off Jazz Dance Company in France for an advanced training and cultural exchange programme.
As part of the invitation, She will stay in Nice, France, from 13 November 2025 to 28 January 2026. During her visit, she will receive advanced training in Laban Movement Analysis and other contemporary techniques. She will also conduct sessions on traditional Bangladeshi dance forms for French dancers and artistes. Additionally, she is scheduled to participate in the 25th Cannes International Dance Festival, collaborating with the Off Jazz Dance Company in Cannes.
Sengupta is known for her original dance theatre productions, including "Waterness", "Anamika Sagorkonna", "Ho Chi Minh", "Odommo – The Indomitable", "Resolution", "Nondini", "Oronya – The Forest Goddess", and "Nature's Tale". Beyond performance, she has devoted significant work to research on community-based and traditional dance practices in Bangladesh. Her documentation includes the dance forms of tea garden workers in Sreemangal and the Aroti or Dhunochi dance seen in both rural and urban festival cultures.
Expressing her gratitude, she shared, "I am deeply honoured to receive this invitation from the GIANIN LORINGETT Off Jazz Dance Company in France. This opportunity allows me to continue my artistic journey through advanced training and meaningful cultural exchange. I look forward to sharing the dance heritage of Bangladesh on an international platform and learning from fellow artists in France."
Founded in 2014, Turongomi is one of Bangladesh's leading dance theatre repertories, known for creating original works rooted in South Asian traditions while fostering global engagement. Turongomi School of Dance became the first Bangladeshi dance education institution to receive membership from the International Dance Council, UNESCO, in 2019. Pooja Sengupta is also a member. She received the Noorul Quader Entrepreneur Award in 2018 and the Friendship Medal from the President of Vietnam in 2022 for her production "Ho Chi Minh".
