Detectives tonight arrested a ruling Awami League MP Manzurul Islam Liton from the house of one of his relatives in Uttara of Dhaka in a case filed over shooting a 10-year-old boy in October 2.
Liton, lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 contituency, was arrested from the house in Uttara around 10:00pm, Shaikh Nazmul Alam, deputy commissioner (North) of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Daily Star.
He will be taken to DB office at Minto Road tonight, the police official said.
We will send him to Gaibandha tomorrow, he added.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court cleared the way for law enforcers to arrest of Liton, staying a High Court order that had asked him to surrender before a lower court by October 18.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the HC order for a week in two cases.
The Awami League lawmaker was implicated in the cases for allegedly shooting the boy and looting and vandalising a house soon after the firing.
On October 2, the lawmaker shot fourth grader Sourav Mia in both legs when the boy was taking a morning walk with his uncle at Gopalcharan village in Gaibandha, said Sourav's family members.
The following day, the victim's father filed a case with Sundarganj Police Station, accusing Liton of attempted murder. Sourav is now receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The other case was filed on October 6 against Liton and nine "of his men" on charges of vandalising a house and looting furniture and corrugated tin sheets from its roof in a Gaibandha village soon after the shooting.
Sourav is now receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Legal notice seeks his arrest

SC lawyer Eunus Ali Akond today sent a legal notice to the government asking it to arrest lawmaker Liton in 24 hours.
Liton violated his oath and acted as unconstitutional mean by shooting 10-year-old Sourav, which is sedition, Eunus mentioned in the notice.
A writ petition will be filed with the HC for appropriate action against Liton if he is not arrested in 24 hours, the notice said.
The home secretary, inspector general of police, director general of Rapid Action Battalion, superintendent of police in Gaibandha, chief judicial magistrate of Gaibandha and speaker to the parliament have been made respondents to the legal notice.
