‘Robber’ killed in Jhenidah ‘gunfight’
An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Moheshpur upazila of Jhenidah early today.
Deceased Md Shaharul Islam Khokon, 36, was accused in at least seven robbery cases filed with different police stations, our Jhenidah correspondent reports quoting police.
A group of robbers blocked Khalishpur-Jibonnagar road felling tree in front of a ceramic factory to commit robbery, said Rashedul Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Moheshpur Police Station.
They opened fire targeting a patrolling police team, who reached the spot around 2:00am, the OC said.
In self-defence, the law enforcers also shot fires triggering the “gunfight”, the police official said.
When the robbers fled the scene, police found Shaharul’s body and recovered a shooter gun, one bullet and some sharp weapons from the spot, he said.
The body was sent it to Jhenidah General Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said adding that Shaharul was the son of Abdul Hamid of Gopunathpur village in Chowgachha upazila of Jashore.
