Robber killed in Kushtia gunfight: police
An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia early today.
The deceased, identified as Mohon Ali, 35, was a robber gang member accused in at least 14 cases over various charges with different police stations, our Kushtia correspondent reports, quoting police.
The gunfight took place beside the Kushtia-Ishwardi road near Lalonshah Bridge around 3:00am, said Mohammad Shahjalal, officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station.
A police team conducted a raid in the area and engaged in a gunfight when confronted by a gang of robbers, who were preparing for robbery on the road, the OC said.
Police found a body when robbers fled the scene, the police official added.
Later, police came to know that the dead was Mohon of Daulatkhali village under Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia.
A pistol, two machetes and two rounds of ammunitions were recovered from the spot, he said.
Seeking anonymity, a relative of the deceased told our correspondent that Mohon stayed at Daulatpur bordering area and they lost communication with him a long time ago.
"We were informed that police in plain clothes detained Mohon from a Daulatkhali bordering area on Monday."
When asked, Officer-In-Charge (investigation) Mohammad Zahurul Islam of Bheramara Police Station denied such an allegation.
