‘Robber’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’
An alleged ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Cumilla early today.
Deceased Delwar Hossain Delu, 36, of Fatehpur village in Chandina upazila, was accused in at least seven cases on different charges including robbery and possessing illegal arms, reports our Cumilla correspondent quoting police.
Four police personnel including the officer-in-charge of Chandina Police Station were also injured during the incident took place at on Shreemontapur border at Tulatoli village in Chandina around 3:00am, said Sub-inspector Giasuddin of the police station.
Acting on a secret information that a gang of robbers were meeting in Karaitola area in a bid to commit robbery, police raided Tulatoli village, said SI Gias.
Sensing their presence, the robbers started firing at the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliated with gunshots triggering a “gunfight”, the police official added.
At one stage, Delwar was shot while his cohorts managed to flee the scene, he said.
Delwar was rushed to Cumilla Medial College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the sub inspector said.
The injured police officials -- OC Md Abul Foysal, sub inspector Waheduzzaman, constables Rehan Uddin and Sayem Khan -- were undergoing treatment at Chandina Upazila Health Complex, he said.
A pipegun, two bullets and five sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, the police official said.
