Govt mulls abolishing group-wise curriculum up to secondary level

The government is considering abolishing the three streams -- science, humanities and business studies -- at the secondary level, Education Minister Dipu Moni informed parliament today.

“In that case, all students will get the opportunity to study in group or section-wise curriculum from Class XI after strengthening their base through achieving education on same subjects up to Class X,” she said in reply to a query from Jatiya Party MP Fakhrul Imam.

In a scripted answer, Dipu Moni said the ministry is modifying the textbook curriculum of secondary level in order to accommodate the latest proven concepts, methods and practices.

While replying to another query, Dipu Moni told the House that the Education Act will be placed in parliament soon following approval in the cabinet.

In reply to a query from Awami League lawmaker M Abdul Latif, the education minister said the government has set up Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at 37 public and 58 private universities to ensure quality education and to assess activities of all departments and institutes of those universities.

“Institutional Quality Assurance Cell will be set up at all universities in phases,” she said.

In reply to a query from AL MP Shamima Akhtar Khanom, Dipu Moni said allegations were raised that there are several educational institutions which were enlisted under the monthly payment order (MPO) but their names are after controversial and anti-liberation war persons.

She said the government has taken measures to change the names of those educational institutions. 

In reply to another query from AL lawmaker Zafor Alam, Dipu Moni said a group of researchers of Microbiology Department of Dhaka University has invented a vaccine to prevent “Foot and Mouth Disease.”

“The process for applying patent for the invention of the vaccine is underway,” she also said.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossen today told the House that admission rate in primary level school was 97.74 per cent in 2019.

The government is implementing all activities aimed at enrolling hundred percent children eligible for going to school, he added.
