Dhaka University's Cultural and Film Club of the Department of Women and Gender Studies (DWGS) successfully hosted a painting contest based on the slogan "Let's Paint for Change, Let's Raise Our Voice with Painting!" on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.

The theme of the contest was "Violence Against Women (VAW)". This event was arranged exclusively for the current students of Dhaka University. Participants representing different departments and sessions were encouraged to channel their voices through artworks focused on the elimination of violence against women. There were two segments in this event: digital paint and handmade paint.

The resulting paintings of the contest — both digital and handmade — powerfully depicted women's struggles, societal perceptions of women, and the resilience and rise of women after setbacks.

As the university was closed, the entire competition was successfully conducted online. Prizes and certificates for the winners will be distributed once in-person classes resume.

This impactful event was the first major initiative launched by the new DWGS Cultural and Film Club committee. Its execution was made possible by the continuous encouragement and guidance of the Faculty Advisors: Aditi Sabur, Associate Professor; Dr Ishrat Jahan Khan, Associate Professor; and Atia Sanjida Sushoma, Lecturer. Their support, combined with the efforts of the committee members, ensured the event's success.

Nishat Tanjim Nera is a Campus Ambassador for The Daily Star from Dhaka University.
