Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote demands removal of DC Masud

Stages protest march; accuses police of repression and class bias

The Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote, a coalition of left‑leaning student organisations, demanded the removal of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam after holding a protest march over the police assault on Nayem Uddin, an Anthropology student of Dhaka University and leader of Biplabi Chhatra Jubo Andolon.

The procession began today at 7:00pm from Payra Chattar at the Teacher‑Student Centre (TSC), marched through VC Chattar and Hallpara, and ended at the Raju Sculpture.

Protesters chanted slogans condemning the assault and calling for accountability.

At a rally following the march, leaders demanded exemplary punishment for police personnel involved.

Addressing the rally, Nayem said the incident exposed the reckless and anti‑people character of the police.

"Even though I identified myself as a DU student, the police behaved aggressively. It becomes clear to the general public -- from rickshaw pullers and day labourers to garment workers -- how much class discrimination and hatred this state upholds against ordinary people," he said.

Nuzia Hasin Rasha, president of the Dhaka University unit of Biplobi Chhatra Maitri, expressed solidarity, saying, “There is no difference in character between the Awami League, the interim administration and the newly elected BNP government.”

“The human rights violations committed at Suhrawardy Udyan under the leadership of DC Masud are not an isolated incident. The first repressive attack on democratic movements in the post-uprising period was also carried out under his leadership. Yet he was never brought under any form of accountability,” she added.

Rafiquzzaman Farid, general secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, added, “Even after Hasina fled, the system that made her fascist continues. Even if the police uniform changes, their character remains the same, in similar fashion.”
