How to stop ChatGPT from using your data for training
As AI tools like ChatGPT become an integral part of daily life, concerns about data privacy are growing. While OpenAI uses user interactions to improve its models, some users may prefer not to have their data contribute to this process. For such users, OpenAI offers an option to opt out of data sharing, allowing them to maintain greater control over their information.
Here's how you can update your settings to stop ChatGPT from using your data for training purposes.
On the web version
- Log in to chatgpt.com
- Click on your account name or profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Navigate to Data Controls.
- Toggle off the option labelled 'Improve the model for everyone'.
This action ensures that OpenAI no longer uses your conversations with ChatGPT to train or refine its AI models.
On the ChatGPT mobile app
- Open the ChatGPT app on your device.
- From the home screen, tap the two-line menu icon at the top-left corner of the screen.
- Look at the bottom-left corner, where your account name is displayed, and tap the three dots next to it.
- On the new screen, select Data Controls.
- Toggle off the option 'Improve the model for everyone'.
From the same Data Controls menu, you can also manage other aspects of your data. For example, you can clear your existing chat history, removing prior conversations from OpenAI's systems. If you no longer wish to use ChatGPT, you also have the option to permanently delete your account.
Taking these steps is especially important for those who prioritise privacy or work with sensitive information. While opting out limits your data's use in model training, OpenAI notes that certain data may still be retained for regulatory or compliance purposes. Regularly reviewing your privacy settings ensures that your preferences are respected and your data is handled according to your comfort level.
