From pedals to pace: Ashwani Kumar’s journey to IPL glory

On a jubilant Monday evening, the quiet village of Jhanjhari in Mohali transformed into a carnival of celebrations.

The air resonated with cheers, laughter, and the sound of bursting crackers as family, friends, and neighbors of 23-year-old Ashwani Kumar Rana rejoiced in his remarkable IPL debut for Mumbai Indians. At the heart of the celebration was a humble cycle and a shining trophy, proudly displayed by his father, Harkesh Kumar Rana, his mother, Meena, elder brother, Shiv Rana, and a host of well-wishers.

While Ashwani was making headlines by dismantling the Kolkata Knight Riders' batting lineup at Wankhede—claiming the prized wickets of Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell—his father's eyes were fixated on an old bicycle. That cycle symbolised Ashwani's relentless journey, often covering the 11-kilometer distance from Jhanjhari to the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali, where his cricketing dreams began to take shape.

Harkesh Kumar Rana, father of cricketer Ashwani Kumar Rana, along with family and friends, proudly celebrates Ashwani’s 4-wicket haul on Monday, displaying his cycle and trophy at their Jhanjhari village home in Mohali.

"Rain or shine, Ashwani never missed his training," recalls Harkesh Kumar, struggling to hold back tears. "Sometimes he cycled, sometimes he took shared autos. I remember giving him just 30 rupees for the fare, and today, when he was picked up for 30 lakh rupees by Mumbai Indians in the mega auction, I realized his hard work had finally paid off."

The entire village, including Ashwani's childhood friends—Dr. Jaspreet Soni, Dr. Baljinder Singh, and Mohit Rana—joined the celebration. They reminisced about the early days when Ashwani and his friend Aman Thakur would play on the local school ground, often urging other village boys to join in the early morning practice sessions.

"Ashwani was always the first to arrive at the ground," says his elder brother, Shiv. "He never let anything deter him. Sometimes he played barefoot, wearing canvas shoes, with friends chipping in to buy cricket balls and spikes. His dream was to play for a big team, and today, he has done that."

Under the mentorship of renowned coaches like Dinesh and Sumit Ohri at the PCA Academy, and with guidance from former Indian pacer VRV Singh, Ashwani honed his raw talent. His determination saw him rise through the ranks, from playing alongside established Punjab cricketers like Abhishek Sharma, Ramandeep Singh, and Arshdeep Singh to making his mark in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 Cup, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker in 2023.

The Mumbai Indians' scouts took note of his exceptional performance, leading to his IPL contract worth Rs 30 lakh. His impact was immediate. In his debut match, he announced his arrival with a brilliant catch to dismiss Quinton de Kock. Then, with his very first IPL delivery, he sent back KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane. His next over saw him claim the scalps of Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey, before he clean-bowled the dangerous Andre Russell.

Ashwani's unique left-arm pace, coupled with his ability to bowl under pressure, has already earned him praise from cricketing legends. With Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Deepak Chahar as mentors in Mumbai Indians' pace attack, the future looks bright for this young sensation.

From cycling through village roads to walking into the high-pressure world of the IPL, Ashwani Kumar Rana's journey is nothing short of inspiring. As his proud father looks at the cycle once more, he knows it was never just about the ride—it was about the resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering belief that one day, his son would make it big. And now, he has.
