India opener Shubman Gill found himself in an awkward situation on Saturday during the pre-final press conference of the ICC Champions Trophy.

For a few days, there have been speculations that India skipper Rohit Sharma might quit captaincy and even retire from international cricket after the Champions Trophy.

Adding fuel to this speculation, Rohit also didn't attend the pre-match press conference ahead of the final and the Indian team sent their vice-captain Gill to speak in front of the journalists.

Gill was asked in the last question of the press meet by an Indian journalist whether there had been any discussion about the speculation in the Indian dressing room.

"No sir, till now we have only been discussing about winning the match, winning the Champions Trophy. He [Rohit] has not spoken to me or to the team about this decision. I don't think Rohit is thinking about it," he said.

But his next line while answering the question put him in an awkward situation.

"After the match, he may take the decision, but right now, there is no discussion about it," he said.

The press conference was over with the answer but after realising the severity of his last line, Gill returned to the press conference room a few minutes later and requested the present journalists to expunge his last line.

According to some Indian journalists covering the tournament, Rohit intentionally skipped pre-final press conference to avoid any kind of controversy before the final but Gill's answer to Rohit's future in international cricket once again made the situation murky before the last hurdle against New Zealand on Sunday.
