BCL suspends JnU unit after fresh clashes
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) suspended its unit in Jagannath University (JnU) following another clash at campus today.
Golam Rabbani, general secretary of BCL central committee, confirmed The Daily Star of the development this evening.
“The committee has been suspended as the leadership of the prevailing committee has failed to keep peace at campus,” he said.
A four-member body has also been formed to investigate the incidents of factional feuds. It will report within seven working days.
Today’s clashes, that comes in a series of infightings since January, left at least 10 including the proctor and assistant proctor hurt.
Five university buses were vandalised at campus. All the injured were rushed to Jagannath University Medical Centre. Three were later taken to hospitals.
Witnesses said, rivalry and supremacy were reasons behind the clashes that erupted on the campus around 9:30am this morning.
JnU Proctor Noor Muhammad was physically assaulted when he approached to stop the violence by the BCL men at campus.
Chase and counter-chase between the two groups armed with machetes, hammers, iron rods and wooden sticks, continued till 1:30pm.
JnU Vice Chancellor Prof Mijanur Rahman told The Daily Star: “We will investigate it. Action will be taken following the probe report.”
The Daily Star collected the names of the injured persons: Md Shaheen Mollah, Mamun, Khaled Mahmud Sujon, Shamsul Huda Gazi, Rezoan, Israk Chowdhury, Mahfuz and Pranto.
Previously, infightings took place at campus on January 10. Another incident of attack on a student took place four days ago.
