Students to block key Dhaka intersections demanding ordinance for proposed Central University
Students of the proposed Dhaka Central University have announced a blockade of several major intersections in Dhaka, including Science Lab, Technical, and Tantibazar intersections, tomorrow to demand the issuance of an ordinance for the university.
According to a press release, the students plan to block the intersections from 11:00am.
The release said the draft Dhaka Central University Act-2025, aimed at establishing the university by integrating seven colleges, was published on the website of the Secondary and Higher Education Division on September 24 last year.
Following its publication, widespread discussion and debate emerged both in favour of and against the proposal, prompting the education ministry to hold several consultation meetings with relevant stakeholders.
The ministry later revised the draft law.
The students said meetings were held between them and ministry officials during a continuous sit-in programme in front of Shikkha Bhaban on December 7 and 8 last year, during which authorities assured them that an ordinance would be issued in early January.
The press release added that students have learned a meeting of the advisory council of the interim government may be held on January 15.
They demanded that the revised Dhaka Central University Act-2025 be approved at the meeting and that a final ordinance be issued by the president on the same day.
