Barishal-6 independent candidate demands withdrawal of some govt officials
An independent candidate contesting the Barishal-6 constituency has demanded the withdrawal of the assistant returning officer, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), and several law enforcement officials, alleging possible bias ahead of the February 12 national election.
Captain (retd) Md Kamrul Islam Khan raised the demand at a press conference held at the Barishal Reporters’ Unity at around 11:00am today.
He alleged that the Bakerganj UNO and assistant returning officer, Rumana Afroz, has been implementing development plans over the past one and a half years in coordination with leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat, which, he claimed, has resulted in close affiliations with political figures.
“In such a situation, there is a strong possibility of partiality during the election. To ensure neutrality, her withdrawal is necessary,” he said.
The candidate also expressed concern over the role of Additional Superintendent of Police (Gournadi Circle) Masum Billah, stating that his home is located within the electoral constituency. He further alleged that the officer had previously been associated with Islami Chhatra Shibir, which, according to him, could influence the election process.
Kamrul additionally called for the withdrawal of all outpost-in-charges (fari in-charges), alleging their involvement and close coordination with political activists.
He said voters have been expressing doubts about whether they would be able to cast their votes freely. “For the sake of a neutral and credible election, the assistant returning officer and all officials responsible for maintaining law and order should be withdrawn,” he added.
The independent candidate said he has already sent written complaints by post to the Chief Election Commissioner as well as to the highest levels of the administration.
