A legal notice was served today on Mufti Amir Hamza, asking him to issue a public apology in 48 hours for making "derogatory and false" comments about Jahangirnagar University (JU).

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan, also a JU senate member and its former student, sent the notice saying appropriate legal action would be initiated against Hamza if he fails to comply with it.

The notice was dispatched to Hamza's village home address in Kushtia by post, the lawyer added.

Referring to reports in newspapers, online portals and YouTube videos, he said comments recently made by Amir Hamza, who claimed to be a former student of JU's Journalism and Media Studies department, at a waz mahfil that JU students "rinse their mouths with alcohol in the morning at residential halls" and "beat up teachers with sticks", caused an uproar.

The comments were identified as "false and derogatory", said the lawyer, requesting Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to remove those from all social media platforms.

The legal notice argued that Hamza's comments tarnished the university's long-earned reputation and created a negative impression among students and guardians.

Although JU has already issued a statement rejecting Hamza's claims, he has not retracted his remarks yet, it added.
