Fireworks, lanterns forbidden on Dec 31st

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced today those celebrating new years' eve this year won't be allowed to fly lanterns, or light fireworks.

Speaking to reporters at the secretariat after a meeting on law and order on the occasion of Christmas and the 31st Night celebration, the adviser said, "We have forbidden flying lanterns on the 31st night. We have banned fireworks and lanterns."

The home adviser observed, "Many times we have seen chaos being created by young people on the 31st night."

Referring to tendency of engaging in drinking among those celebrating 31st night, he urged citizens, "You can forbid them from doing this. Then they will be careful."

"We will close the regularly operating bars on 31st Night," he added. "So that there is no chaos created on the roads."
