Dhaka braces for political rallies over three-day public holiday

As a three-day public holiday begins tomorrow, Dhaka is set to witness political rallies, raising the prospect of large gatherings and heightened activity across the capital.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will launch the series with a workers' rally at Nayapaltan tomorrow, marking International Labour Day.

Different political parties will also hold separate rallies marking the May Day.

On May 2, the National Citizens' Party (NCP), led by youth leaders, will stage a demonstration in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, calling for justice and pressing a set of national demands.

On May 3, Hefazat-e IslamBangladesh will hold a grand assembly at Suhrawardy Udyan in protest against the proposals of the Women's Reform Commission and some other issues.

The organisers said preparations for the gathering had been underway for over a month.

According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, the upcoming holidays will begin tomorrow, marking the May Day. This will be followed by the regular weekend on Friday and Saturday, granting the government staff a three-day break.
