Bangladeshi shot dead by ‘BSF’ on Jhenidah border

A Bangladesh national was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) inside Indian territory opposite to Laraighat border in Jhenidah's Maheshpur upazila today, family claimed.

The deceased is identified as Ariful Islam (28) of Shyamkur village in Maheshpur upazila, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

Quoting the victim's family members, BGB's Maheshpur-58 Captain Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana said a group of seven to eight people, including Ariful, went to India crossing Bangladesh's Laraighat border to bring cattle early today.

When they reached India's Hanskhali border around 5:30am, BSF members opened fire, leaving Ariful dead on the spot.

However, the others managed to flee away, leaving Ariful's body in Hanskhali, the BGB official said.

A message from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was sent to India's Hanskhali Pakhiura BSF camp for holding a flag meeting.

No response has been received from the BSF yet, the official said in the afternoon.

Jamirul Islam, chairman of Maheshpur's Shyamkaru union parishad, also confirmed the incident.
