A Bangladeshi expatriate was hacked to death during a clash between two factions of BNP stemmed from a land dispute in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila today.

The incident occurred around 10:00am in Kala village under Padmakar union.

The deceased was identified as Mahbub Hossain, 40, of the village. He had returned home four months ago from Cambodia.

After returning, he became involved in local politics under the faction led by a local Jubo Dal leader Ziaur Rahman Zia.

Zia, also a cousin of the victim, said there had been a dispute over the land belonging to their relatives with the faction led by ward-level BNP leader Humayun Molla.

"Members of Humayun Group attacked Mahbub with machetes. We rushed him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, but he died shortly after arrival," added Zia.

Attempts to reach Humayun by phone were unsuccessful.

Dr Faria Tahsin, a physician at the emergency department of Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, said the victim had deep head injuries caused by sharp weapons, along with wounds to his neck, back and lower waist.

Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station OC Abdullah Al Mamun said police had been deployed to prevent further clashes.

"An autopsy will be conducted for the victim's body after completing the inquest. Efforts are underway to arrest the attackers," he said.
