7 colleges set 15-day deadline for framework on independent university

Seven college students end blockade programme

Students of seven colleges, previously affiliated with Dhaka University, have set a 15-day deadline for the government to present the framework for establishing an independent university for the colleges.

"We want a framework detailing what the university for the seven colleges will look like. The committee responsible for formulating the framework has informed us that their work is complete and assured us that they will submit it soon. However, we have set a 15-day deadline to that end," Abdur Rahman, a student of Dhaka College and spokesperson of the movement demanding the transformation of the seven colleges into an independent university, told reporters today.

He spoke to reporters following a discussion among the student representatives of the seven colleges at Dhaka College auditorium.

Earlier in the day, the students of seven colleges lifted their 24-hour ultimatum for fulfilling their six-point demand after a meeting with the home and information advisers.

"We have withdrawn our 24-hour ultimatum after getting assurances for fulfilling our six-point demands," Moinul Islam, a student of Dhaka College and a spokesman of the students, told reporters after the meeting held at the home ministry at the the Secretariat.

Moinul said that the government has shown a positive attitude to their demands and met several of those by now.

He said the college students also called off their programme of besieging the New Market Police Station and barring DU buses from plying the streets.

Moinul said, in line with their demands, the authorities concerned have severed the affiliation of the seven colleges with the DU and opened the city corporation roads for all on the DU campus.

Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Information Adviser Nasid Islam spoke with the students for around one and a half hours from 1:30pm.

Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, special assistant to the chief adviser, also joined the meeting.

"We discussed their demands and problems in detail," the home adviser later told reporters.

According to officials, the student delegation demanded immediate legal action against the police personnel and withdrawal of the officer-in-charge of the New Market Police Station for the attack on Dhaka College student Rakib and urged the government to investigate their complaints in three working days.

They also demanded punishment of the DU students who allegedly verbally abused some female college students and the resignation of the DU pro-vice-chancellor (academic).
