The vice principal of Habibullah Bahar College was hacked to death at an apartment in the capital's Uttarkhan area early today.

The deceased is Syfur Rahman Bhuiyan, 45, of Brahmanbaria.

The wife of the deceased lives in a house in the area of Pir Saheb in Shantinagar with their two children. Whereas, Saifur lived in Uttarkhan.

The incident occurred around 5:00am on the third floor of a six-storey building in the Puranpara area, Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Uttarkhan Police Station, told The Daily Star.

According to the OC, Syfur frequently visited the apartment, where a man -- who introduced himself as his nephew -- and a woman had been living after renting the place six months ago.

Both the man and the woman have been on the run since the incident.

Police suspect their involvement in the murder.

"We are trying to determine the motive behind the killing," he said.

Syfur was taken to a hospital in Uttara, where doctors declared him dead.

His body was later sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Police are investigating the case, he added.
