The Detective Branch of Police picked up prominent actor Meher Afroz Shaon for questioning from the capital's Dhanmondi area today.

Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the development to The Daily Star around 9:45pm.

The DB chief said she has been detained on charges of plotting conspiracy against the state.

Around 8:00pm, the police official said the actor was arrested.

When asked if any case was filed, he said it would be disclosed later.

According to a DMP media wing notification, Shaon was taken to the DB office for questioning.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters set fire to the ancestral home of Shaon in Jamalpur this evening.

They set fire to the house belonging to Engineer Mohammad Ali, Shaon's father, around 6:00pm near Narundi Railway Station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.

Mohammad Ali had sought an Awami League nomination for the Jamalpur-5 (Sadar) constituency in the 12th national election.

Her mother, Begum Tahura Ali, served as an MP from the reserved seat for women from 1996-2001 and again from 2009-2014.
