Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has submitted the charge sheet against seven people, including former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhter, in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

Investigation Officer of the case Abu Jafar Mohammad Omar Faruk submitted the charge sheet to the prosecution branch of the court around 3:30pm today (September 13, 2022).

The other accused are Kamrul Islam Musa, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola alias Haniful Haque, Motaleb Mia Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Khairul Islam Kalu and Md Shahjahan Mia, said court sources.

Kamrul Islam Musa was Babul Akter's informant. Among the accused Babul, Wasim, Shahjahan and Anwar are now behind bars while Ehteshamul Haque Bhola secured bail from the High Court in the case. Musa and Kalu are on the run since the murder.

PBI also dropped the name of Saidul Islam Sakku, Nurunnabi, Md Rashed and Abu Naser Gunnu. Sakku is the younger brother of Musa while Rashed and Nurnnabi were killed in a shootout with police after a few days of Mitu's murder. In the charge sheet, PBI named 97 persons as witnesses.

Around 3pm, PBI team came to court taking the 2084-page charge sheet.

After handing over the charge sheet PBI SP Naima Sultana told journalists "We have submitted the charge sheet of Mitu murder case after investigation. During our investigation, we found Babul Akter as accused in the murder."

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (Persecution) Kamrul Hasan of CMP said "We submitted the charge sheet to the court from persecution after receiving it. The court will see it on October 10, scheduled date, for Mitu murder case."

The dramatic turnaround from plaintiff to prime accused happened after Babul was summoned for interrogation to Chattogram PBI metro office after Babul failed to answer detectives' questions satisfactorily.

Among the questions was one surrounding, a payment of Tk 3 lakh via Babul's business partner to Kamrul Islam Musa -- the fugitive accused in the original case and a long-time informant of Babul when he was an SP. The payment was made soon after the murder, said PBI officials.

Two of the testimonies were given by Sayful Haque -- Babul's business partner -- and Kazi Al Mamun, a relative of fugitive accused Musa before the court in this regard. Sayful had said he arranged the money from Babul's share of profits from their business and sent the money via mobile banking service to Musa, said a top PBI official.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.

Later PBI took over the case from DB of CMP.

On May 11 this year, Chattogram PBI summoned Babul to its office for interrogation. He failed to give satisfactory answers to the detectives and was taken into PBI custody. The following day, Mitu's father filed a murder case against eight people, making Babul the prime accused in the case. Mitu's father alleged that Babul is the mastermind of the killing and he killed his wife over extramarital affairs.
