Toll plaza tragedy: Driver had no valid licence

Rab today said that the driver of the bus involved in ramming three other vehicles at the toll plaza of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway yesterday had not renewed his license.
During the primary interrogation Nuruddin, the driver, also claimed that the bus, which was put into service yesterday after repairs, had brake issues, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Taposh Karmakar, also media officer of the Rab-10.
The driver was arrested from Narayanganj's Siddhirganj last night, said Rab.
Quoting the driver, Taposh said the bus was put into service after repairs yesterday after sitting idle for a long time.
However, the driver realised from the beginning that the vehicle's braking system was not working properly. When the bus owner was informed about it, he asked the driver to drive slowly, the Rab official said.
The bus driver claimed that the bus could not be stopped despite engaging the brakes several times during the crash, Taposh added.
The driver during the interrogation confessed that he occasionally consumed cannabis but did not take it yesterday while driving the bus.
The driver will be handed over to the Highway police after completing the necessary legal process, he added.
Earlier, AKM Aktharuzzaman Bosunia, superintendent of Gazipur highway police, confirmed the arrests of two people, including the bus driver, over the crash.
Around 11:15am yesterday, six people from two families were killed when the bus hit three vehicles -- a private car, motorcycle and microbus -- at the toll plaza in South Keraniganj.
The bus was seized after the incident, but the staffers managed to escape.
