The bus that rammed into a private car and a microbus at a toll plaza on the Mawa Expressway killing six people had no valid documents.

The Bepari Paribahan bus, that was involved in the fatal accident caught on CCTV on Friday, had been in operation without valid documents.

The bus (Dhaka Metro Ba 14-5170), registered under Dhaka metro circle 2 (Ekuria) in July 2010, was running without a fitness clearance for over a year.

Its fitness had expired in October last year, sources at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) said citing documents.

Yesterday, the bus was heading for Kuakata of Patuakhali, in violation of its approved route, which was actually Dhaka (Sayedabad)-Padma Bridge-Bhanga-Khulna route, said BRTA sources. But even that approval for the route had expired in March this year.

The bus was also operating without updated tax documents, violating the relevant law. The deadline for updating the bus's tax token had expired in July last year, they said.

The owner of the bus was mentioned as Nitol Motors when it was registered with BRTA 14 years ago.

A BRTA official said the bus appears to have been procured under loan and that's why Nitol Motors' name was mentioned as its owner.

The official explained that the original owner might not have changed the ownership formally. As a result, Nitol Motors still appears as the bus owner on BRTA database, he said wishing not to be named.

Police today arrested two persons, including the bus driver, in connection with yesterday's road crash. But reason behind the accident could not be ascertained as yet.

The BRTA official said, referring to a video footage of the incident, break failure or carelessness of the driver might be the reason behind the road crash.

He said, it was normal procedure to form a probe body to investigate the accident.
