The Bhabadah Mashihati College in Jashore’s Abhaynagar upazila has remained inundated for around two months now, prompting the authorities to halt all academic activities there. The vast Bhabadah region covers 200 villages in three upazilas in Jashore and two in Khulna. As surrounding rivers have lost their navigability due to the accumulation of silt, there is no proper drainage for rainwater, and the region remains submerged throughout the monsoon almost every year. At least 65 educational institutions in the region are currently under water. The photo was taken recently.

Mahalaya marks the beginning of Durga Puja – the largest religious festival for the Hindu community. The day commemorates the mythical moment when Durga had descended on Earth to vanquish Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
