Cleanliness during Eid ul Azha
While the sacrifice of a beloved animal during Eid ul Azha has significant value to everyone and is a celebration for all Muslims, one thing we fail to keep in mind is to maintain the cleanliness of our surroundings.
Here are a few tips on how you can keep your surroundings clean with ease.
Firstly, bleach. This helps prevent the smell of blood from spreading and also works as a disinfectant. Covering the blood with bleaching powder before washing it off ensures that the place will be clean and flies will not gather over it after it is washed off. While the smell of bleach can be off-putting as well, it does not linger for too long.
Another very important thing we should keep in mind is to properly dispose of the waste of an animal. The city corporation usually takes responsibility to collect them. If this is properly maintained, waste is not left rotting here and there keeping the environment clean and pleasant.
If the sacrifices are made in the designated area decided by the city corporation then the entire area is not polluted and everything is more hygienic and organised. Holes are usually dug out in these areas for the blood to pour into making the cleaning process easier and hassle-free.
A problem that is commonly faced even after Eid day is the odour that is left in the elevators of apartment buildings. It is best to avoid carrying raw meat in the elevators as it not only leaves an odour but also blood may spill making it dirty as well. If it is not possible to use the stairs, then the door of the lift should be left open for a while at the end of the day so that the smell does not linger in the closed space. The smell of raw meat and blood stays for days making it very suffocating while using the lifts.
Lastly, to keep the insides of our homes clean, we can use large sheets of plastic while carrying and sorting the raw meat. While it is not the most environment-friendly approach, this will prevent blood from getting on the floors and making the whole house dirty. It is also important to ensure proper ventilation as the smell may linger in a closed space for a long time. This can be very off-putting for guests or even the ones staying at home.
Blood, even after it is cleaned can still leave a smell and even stains on carpets that are very hard to get out. However, it is also important to dispose of the plastic covers properly and not just leave them lying around on the streets.
Let us not forget the environment around us and maintain proper hygiene amidst the celebration of Eid this year.
